Daily Surf and Wind Report

Saturday, January 24 2015

Plenty of surf today.  The 40kt southeaster last night didn't take long to kick up a pretty large swell today.   The buoy had it at 21 feet at 6:50 this morning.   There was alot of paddling but if you waited long enough there were some really good ones to be had.  The rain and wind didn't make it very photogenic but I'm sure there will be some photos showing up on surfline and other media outlets real soon. I tried to get a pic for the report but none of them turned out decent enough to do it justice.  Forecast calls for more NW wind tomorrow morning then dying out by mid day.  There should be some leftovers still around tomorrow.

Hatteras Surf And Wind Report 1/23/2015

What a waste of a Southeaster.  I'm sure the cove is absolutely going off right about now.  As you can see from the pic is solid 20-25 SE and there is some decent swell.  The problem is it's been dark for 2 hours.  We never seem to be able to get all the conditions to line up for the cove to get good any more.    This one is perfect expect for the fact it came after dark.  It always seems to be something either not enough wind bad direction or no swell. One day we will get it good again.  Who knows when but it will happen one day.  On another note we should have some pretty good surf at some point tomorrow when the wind clocks around to the west which should be sometime in the early morning.  It's probably going to take a little time to clean up but should be good sometime mid to late afternoon.   There is some upper 60's low 70 degree water a few miles off the beach so hopefully this southeaster pushes it to the sand.  It would be great to get a January session in a short sleeve full or spring suit.

Hatteras Surf And Wind Report 1/22/2015

What started out as a grey morning with some dense fog quickly turned into another beautiful day here on the Outer Banks.  There wasn't much for wind or waves but that's going to change real soon.  The forecast calls for some pretty heavy wind this weekend.  There should be some decent surf at some point as well with the die out coming sometime late sunday.

Hatteras Surf And Wind Report 1/21/2015

Another absolutely gorgeous day here in Cape Hatteras.  Definitely does not feel like January but I'm sure we are going to pay this weather soon.  There wasn't much for wind or waves today but it was still a great day to be on the beach.

Hatteras Surf And Wind Report 1/20/2015

Great day here on the Outer Banks today.  Air temp was in the 60s and there was some decent wind late this afternoon.  It wasn't quite what they were forecasting but still wasn't bad.  Days like today make all those other cold, windy, grey winter days kind of fade away.  The water on the beach warmed up to around 60 and the sound water probably got to the upper 50's maybe even 60's.  Looks like some big wind coming this weekend and first part of next week.

Hatteras Surf And Wind Report 1/19/2015

It was an absolutely beautiful winter day here on the outer banks.  While it was a little chilly this morning with the WNW wind there wasn't a cloud in the sky.  It was GREAT to get some sunshine today.  There was a little left over wave to this morning in the the chest high range and pretty clean.  As you can see from the picture the South wind yesterday pushed the warm water back in almost to the beach.  We are expected to get some more SW wind tomorrow so hopefully the water on the beach will be back near 60'.  There's nothing like a January session with no gloves.

Hatteras Surf And Wind Report 1/18/2015

I think it might rain today..... There was some decent South wind 20-25 before the rain set in.  It's blowing 30+ in the middle of these rain squals but there isn't much wind forecast on the back side of these.  There is some swell but it's pretty blown out at the moment.  The wind is suppose to clock around west this evening.  There could be some good surf just before dark.  Hopefully the south wind pushed that warm water back to the beach.

Hatteras Surf And Wind Report 1/17/2015

Crisp northery wind around 20kts this morning had the air temps in the upper thirties with the wind chill much colder than that.  The sun was shining all day which help to warm it up pretty quick as the wind let up some in the afternoon.  There still was some left over surf but it was pretty small and cold so I don't think anyone was very motivated to try it.  The forecast calls for some pretty heavy Southerly wind tomorrow so hopefully it will push that warm water back to the beach with some swell.

Hatteras Surf And Wind Report 1/16/2015

Fun little left over waves here today with light to moderate WNW wind.  The water cooled off quite a bit compared to last week but we finally saw the sun today so it wasn't that bad.   The Forecast for tomorrow calls for some North wind around 18-20 early in the morning diminishing out to almost nothing by late afternoon.  Sunday looks like some warmer Southerly wind for a change.  Heres a pic from this afternoon at the lighthouse.

Hatteras Wind And Surf Report For 1/15/2015

Another Cold some what windy grey day here.   There was some surf at the Lighthouse today.  Nothing great but better than than nothing.  The water on the northbeach has dropped again with the wind and NE swell the last couple days.  Its probably in the upper 40's??

Wind was NNW at around 15-18 all day.  Forecast is for more of the same tomorrow increasinig to 20 late in the afternoon.  Should still be a little swell still left in the morning.

Too grey for any pics of the surf today so here's a couple pics of some winter sunsets in Hatteras taken by Donny Bowers.
